Word

All Scripture is God-breathed

2 Timothy 3:16

This is one of two passages in the NT that speak of the divine inspiration of the Scriptures, the other is:

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:20-21

This means that all Scripture…

“owes its origin and content to the divine breath, the Spirit of God”

William Hendriksen

These men of God were inspired by the Spirit, and wrote and spoke accordingly, cf.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 14:26

Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

Mark 13:11

He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls Him ‘Lord’? For he says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”’

Matt. 22:43-44

(cf. Acts 4:25-26).

We read of Stephen just prior to him being martyred by people who began to argue with him,

But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him [Stephen] as he spoke.

Acts 6:10

We can be sure that all Scripture is inspired by God, the Holy Spirit, and is therefore useful for the task of teaching, rebuking, correcting, training in righteousness. Also the faithful disciplined study of the Scriptures reaps untold blessings and benefits, e.g.

Blessed is the onewhose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Psalm 1:1-2

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Joshua 1:8

If this was claimed for the OT how much more the NT! Space does not permit a detailed look into this doctrine of the Word of God but we can say through a quick review from Genesis to Revelation that God has revealed Himself through that which He has created,

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Psalm 19:1

Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Romans 1:19

God expects us to believe He exists, that He is all-powerful and divine, by observing that which He has created. Furthermore, the Scriptures testify right from the beginning to the end that, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” If anyone has a problem believing this then just start studying the life of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Glorious Son of God, and realise how far we have fallen short of His glory.

It is clear also, from the fall in Eden (Genesis 3), to Eden restored (Revelation 22), that no-one can save themselves. But God, in His great love for His creation, has provided not many ways back to Himself, but only one way back to Himself,

Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.

John 14:6-7

Quote of the week

“The Word is the face, the countenance, the representation of God, in whom He is brought to light and made known.”

Clement of Alexandria

Verse of the week

…my word that goes out from my mouth … will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it, [declares the Lord].

Isaiah 55:11

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word which has stood the test of time, and all other tests that have been brought against it. Lord unleash Your Word, that people may come to know you in Spirit and in truth in Jesus Christ, the Word of God, Amen.
