Welcome

“When the flowers open up they spread their fragrance and beauty around. Likewise, we the people of God, reflect His splendour and holiness to others, as we glorify His holy Name and praise Him always.”

Word

The man’s name was Elimelech …

Ruth 1:2

Elimelech’s name means, “God is King,” or “My God is King.” Elimelech would have grown up knowing this, and his godly parents, who had named him, undoubtedly reminded him of this from time to time. But now the very difficult times have come, times of famine, and living as aliens in Moab. He could look at this period and focus on the difficulties and be left asking, and wondering, where is the God who is King? Or he could keep coming back to the fact, by faith, that God is King and even here He is guiding all the events that follow.

No matter how much we mess up, God who is King, the Sovereign Lord, is able to work wonders out of it. Compare the whole message of salvation in the Scriptures from the time that Adam and Eve messed up all the way through to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, dying, rising, ascending, and seated in glory; then pouring out the promised Holy Spirit upon His Church; then look what happened, His church grew, and grew, and grew! And the events in this book of Ruth play a crucial role in the fulfilling of the prophecies regarding the Messiah for Ruth, of all people, and Boaz, are named in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, (Matt. 1:5).

Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology, defines God’s Omnipotence (Power, Sovereignty) thus: “God is able to do all His holy will … [able] to do what He decides to do.” Psalm 115:3 tells us, “God does whatever He pleases.”

So whatever, mess, evil, sin, wickedness, and brokenness, this world throws up, God will always bring about His Sovereign purpose, for He is King, and Ruth the Moabite is part of the human family of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Quote of the week

“If Jesus isn’t the Lord of your life, someone else will be.”

Donald Coggan

Verse of the week

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever, and ever! Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21

Let’s Pray

Sovereign Lord, have Your way in my life, and in the life of Bethel Baptist Church. May we know more, much more of Your Presence amongst us as we gather together to worship You each Sunday. Lord, let us see Your glory; Let Your glory fall on us, in Jesus Christ, Amen!
