How do we know that God exists?

We have looked at the inner sense everyone has of the existence of God, and the evidence found in creation for the existence of God. This week we will look at

(3) The evidence that is found in Scripture

Scripture abounds with evidence for the existence of God and at the very start is an assumption, rather than an argument, that God exists,

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1

The account in Daniel is a powerful testimony to the existence of God. Here, the pagan king, Nebuchadnezzar, has had a dream, and no-one can tell the king what the dream was [a requirement insisted on by the king], let alone interpret it. Daniel prayed to the God of heaven about it and that night:

Daniel praised the God of heaven and said: “… you have made known to us the dream of the king”.

Daniel 2:19, 23

The king asks Daniel: “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?” Daniel replied, “No wise man … can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these…”

Daniel 2:26-28

Daniel, by telling the king what he dreamed and interpreting it, so impacted Nebuchadnezzar that we read:

King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honour and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him. The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery”.

Daniel 2:46, 47

Daniel interpreted another dream the king had resulting in the king losing his sanity for a time. Then we read:

At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honoured and glorified Him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; His kingdom endures from generation to generation … He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: “What have you done?” At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honour and splendour were returned to me … I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. Now I … praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything He does is right and all His ways are just. And those who walk in pride He is able to humble.

Daniel 4:34-36

But it’s one thing to know that God exists and a completely different thing to know God intimately …

Quote of the week

“The Bible does not argue for the existence of God. It reveals Him.”

Verse of the week

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:13

Let’s Pray

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and His paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counsellor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.
