Word
I once read of an atheist stating that if when he died he found out he had made a mistake and God in fact did exist then he would complain to this God that had He given so little evidence of His existence. So has he got a case? On the one hand God is unknowable, no-one has ever seen Him, John 1:18: “No-one has ever seen God” and God says in Exodus 33:20: “… no-one may see me and live”. For this reason we are dependent on God revealing Himself. But this He has done!
(1) In Creation
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-2
Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Romans 1:19-20
And what did people do with this revelation of God? “they suppressed it” (Rom. 1:18):
They neither gave thanks to Him or glorified Him but became foolish and futile in their thinking towards God; they exchanged the truth of God for a lie.
Rom 1:21, 25
(2) Through Israel and the Old Testament Scriptures
God chose Israel that He might bless all nations with a revelation of Himself and of His wonderful grace and salvation:
… all people’s on earth will be blessed through you.
Genesis 12:3
This promise takes us right through into the New Testament where we read of it starting to be fulfilled through Abraham’s seed, God’s Son Jesus Christ. However, even Israel. in large part, was found wanting, they stumbled over the stumbling stone, Jesus Christ, (Romans 9:32-33).
(3) Through His Son and the New Testament Scriptures
The ultimate revelation of God is through His Son, Jesus Christ:
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in the bosom of the Father, in the closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.
John 1:18
Who better to reveal God but God Himself, God’s Son Jesus Christ:
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us”.
John 14:8-11
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.”
“I and the Father are one”
John 10:30
Amen!
Quote of the week
“The name of Jesus is in my mind as a joyful song, in my ear a heavenly music, and in my mouth sweet honey.”
Richard Rolle
Verse of the week
Jesus is “the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.” Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to humankind by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:11-12
Let’s Pray
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the way You have made Yourself known throughout time; Through Your Creation; Through Your chosen people Israel; and especially, through Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You for the Scriptures and the gift of Your Holy Spirit, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. We worship, thank and praise You, our Creator and Redeemer, in and through Jesus Christ, Amen!
