Please read: Proverbs 3

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

These words are easy to write down (especially with ‘Cut and Paste’), but more difficult to live by and the more we see what they really mean, are very difficult to attain at times. Take the first word, “Trust” and look at what Jesus required of His disciples, to totally rely upon Him, e.g.

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Matt. 8:26

Surely, we must feel for the disciples here; we are told a furious storm came upon the lake so that the waves swept over the boat. Judging by Jesus rebuke of them they were very afraid, even terrified (NAB) – who wouldn’t be? But Jesus expects them to trust in Him with all their heart and lean not on their own understanding. What happens next? Jesus rebukes the wind and the waves and it was completely calm (Matt, 8:26). The Disciples reaction was one of amazement and it left them asking the question,

What kind of man is this? Even the winds and waves obey Him!

Matt. 8:27

Jesus used similar words to Peter after he walked on the water for a short while but when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink and cried out to the Lord to save him (Matt. 14:22-33). Again, Jesus dealt with the strong wind and this time when the disciples saw this, they worshipped Him, “Truly You are the Son of God.” Through the trials they had grown in faith.

Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, forgive us when we get afraid and don’t trust in You completely. Strengthen us by Your Spirit that we will trust in You with all our hearts and Lord we entrust the future to You and believe that Your will and ways are best; Your will be done in Jesus Christ, Amen!
